Wes Newman Inspired (Experimental)

My Research/Image Bank:

After researching Wes Newman I decided for one of my shoots that I will photograph people with scotch tape to distort their facial features and create quite a dramatic version of portraits.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
My camera settings within this shoot were placed on...
Exposure 1/60 sec, F/4.5 and an ISO of 500.
For this shoot I also used the studio equipment with stronger lighting and the white background sheet so the brighter effect helps to highlight the facial features being distorted.

Throughout these contact sheets I have underlined the best of my photographs in green, whilst also underlining the images that require most improvement in red. This helps to highlight and criticise myself appropriately.

My Best Images:

Within this shoot I chose to use the style of Wes Newman and his chosen theme of changing the facial structures within the portraits that he captures of people. He achieves this by using sellotape to reconstruct their faces, which is what I have done before beginning to capture these portraits. In my opinion, these photographs were chosen as the best within this shoot as they all represent their own expressive mood and tone within each frame.

Images that need Improvements:

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.
I have chosen these images to be considered the ones that require the most improvements in terms of the focus being lost with the subject from the camera. For example, in some photographs the subjects eyes are closed and loses the connection from the camera capturing the mood of the subject.

My Editing Process:

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

During my editing process, I increased the contrast in some, whilst editing all of the photographs to become black and white. I also smoothed over any  obvious blemishes upon the skin, as well as when changing to black and white placing some with a tint over the top of the photograph.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.
Overall, I think this shoot was a success in terms of using Wes Newman as my photographer inspiration and recreating my portraits in the style of his work. However, due to this only being a type of experimental shoot to help me decide which style of dramatic portraiture I would like to proceed with in my component 2. Although this shoot achieved a unique type of dramatic portraiture I cannot imagine any further shoots to complete following this shoot. Therefore, I will be proceeding with a different style within my following shoots whilst still capturing some sort of dramatic portraiture.
