Zanele Muholi Inspired (Experimental)

My Research/Image Bank:

After researching Zanele Muholi I decided for my first shoot that I will take photographs of a young woman posing different unique props and edit them into high definitions of black and white.

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.
During this photo shoot my camera was placed on the settings of...
Exposure 1/100 sec, F/5.0 and an ISO of 400.
I also used the set up of my own studio with my two soft box lights and the background stand kit with a white sheet.

Throughout these images I have circled my favourite images in green. Whereas, there are a couple of photographs that may need improvements that have been circled in red.

My Best Images:

I chose these photos as my best ones from the group of photographs I collected of this woman. I arranged her to model a few different props where some could potentially relate to different cultures. Creating a similar effect to the one created in Zanele Muholi's work.

Images that need Improvements:

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on work and progress.

I chose these photographs as the ones that require most improvement in a following shoot. This is due to the lack of appropriate lighting in some as well as, the lack of seriousness and focus. I was hoping to achieve a dead pan effect on the emotions of the model which I do not believe was 100% achieved in these photographs.

My Editing Process:

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

During my editing process I created all photographs to be black and white edits, or completely low saturation, in high contrasts to explore the range between the two colours. This closely relates to the style of work of how Zanele Muholi produces her photographs. However, in some I gave the black and white edit a shaded tint over the top to create a different effect.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.

Overall, I believe these final edited photographs were a success in following my mock theme of dramatic portraiture whilst also using the inspiration of my previously researched photographer; Zanele Muholi. However, to ensure that I fully explore a larger majority of portraits whilst fitting under the theme of dramatic portraiture.
