Introduction Research

Before deciding which question I would like to base my mock project on I chose to research my favourites and help me to understand how and what I am going to complete in the following project.
Out of the themes Atmospheric Colours, Found, Close-Up, Windows and Dramatic Portraiture I have decided to do further research and brainstorming on the following...
  • Close-Up
  • Windows
  • Dramatic Portraiture

My Image Banks:

After completing my previous image banks and mind maps for different potential ideas, I have chosen to follow through with the topic of Dramatic Portraiture. I believe I was able to produce more ideas and visualise possible shoots that I would enjoy to complete and fit well with the topic. Whereas, when attempting to create a mind map in the topics of Close Ups and Windows, I struggled to imagine many ideas for shoots that I would need to complete.

Further Research and Analysis:

Before deciding what photographers I would like to use as inspiration for my first shoots I decided to do a more in depth research on certain photographers and their specific photographs, focusing on an individual analysis. For example...
steve mccurry.jpg
Steve McCurry:
There is an aspect of Steve McCurry's work that almost creates a suspicious and uneven feeling, whilst still portraying a serious message.
The piercing green eyes of this young girl appears to be where all the attention goes to when first looking at the photograph.
There is a sense of a different culture being represented within this image, however a piece of her clothing has been torn which may suggest that she has had a tough upbringing potentially due to the fact that she is living in a type of country as a young innocent girl.
wes newman.jpg
Wes Newman:
There is a sense of confusion within Wes Newman's work created from the unique distortion of the ladies face. She almost looks as though she is pain by the strange positioning of her facial features. However, I like how the image has been edited in terms of the colouring and a slight tint over the background with high saturation on her face. For example, the highly saturated red lips definitely stand out the most. I believe that this style of work is a unique way to capture a form of dramatic portraiture.
zanele muholi.jpg
Zanele Muholi:
In Zanele Muholi's style of work it appears that she is capturing different type of ethnicity and culture as a representation of this woman's identity and what she may stand for. There is almost a sense of deadpan being shown through her facial expressions and body language. The young woman almost looks as though she is either angry or very serious which creates an intense emotion from the overall image. The photograph has also been edited in high definitions of black and white.
juliette joudain.jpg
Juliette Jourdain:
I believe that this photographer also creates quite an intense effect with the heavy amounts of make up and hairstyle, as well as the fashion and accessory choices. I believe that there is a sense of a futuristic style being portrayed with the glasses/goggles being worn by this young woman in the photograph. There seems to be a strange headpiece being modelled which creates lots of questions to what is happening and what message is being portrayed in the different choices of fashion and make up.
dain yoon 1 pic.jpg
Dain Yoon:
This photographer, as well as artist, shows a very different and unique effect within her work.
She is a famous illusion artist who focuses on painting the face and body then photographing the art that she has produced.
Within this photo there is the illusion of another person being shadowed onto the artists face. The shadow is modelling a dark side profile looking away. Whilst the artist herself is looking diagonally across the screen so it is clear to see both the shadown painted on and the actual persons face.
geoffrey jones.jpg
Geoffrey Jones:
In Geoffrey Jones style of photographs shows different coloured lighting across the peoples faces and bodies. The colours bounce well off of some facial features, whilst other parts hide in the coloured shadows.
It appears that the young girl in this image has wet hair and modelling naked but she is hiding any innapropriate parts of the body. This could suggest that she could have just got out of the shower and some sort of form of bathing. The girl is modelling a very clear sense of her natural beauty within this photograph.
